The Cost of Silence
The handshake lingered longer than expected firm, filled with purpose, but laced with something unspoken. As their hands parted, a shadow passed across Marco’s expression. He glanced at the journal between them, then back at Luca.
“There’s something else,” he said quietly.
Luca’s smile faded. “What is it?”
Marco looked down, fingers drumming the side of his coffee cup. “Reading your journal… brought back more than just the good memories. It reminded me of how we stopped talking. Of what we left unresolved.”
Luca shifted in his seat. “Marco”
“I know,” Marco interrupted gently. “It’s been years. But if we’re really going to do this together, we can’t pretend it didn’t happen.”
The silence grew heavier. Outside, the world bustled on oblivious to the two men revisiting a fracture long buried.
Luca finally spoke. “You’re talking about the last trip. Portugal.”
Marco nodded. “We were supposed to go together. We made the plan for months. But then… you left without telling me. I found out from your sister. No note. No call. Just gone.”
Luca looked away, jaw tightening. “It wasn’t meant to hurt you. I was overwhelmed. Scared, honestly. Things were changing so fast I didn’t know how to say goodbye without ruining everything.”
“You didn’t say goodbye at all.”
“I know,” Luca said, voice low. “I thought I was chasing something important. But I didn’t realize what I was leaving behind.” Marco’s eyes softened, though the pain was still there. “I kept wondering if I’d done something wrong. Or if I just didn’t matter enough.” Luca leaned forward, his voice barely above a whisper. “You did matter. You still do. That’s why I came today. I’ve thought about that moment a thousand times how I should have done it differently. I’m sorry.” The apology lingered in the air. Marco took a slow breath, letting it in. “Maybe this project,” he said, “is our chance to do things right this time. With each other. And with everyone we hope to reach.” Luca gave a small nod. “No more disappearing. No more silence.” A quiet smile returned to Marco’s face. “Deal.”
As they sat together once more, the weight of the past didn’t disappear but it shifted. It became part of their foundation, not their burden.

Ciao ragazzi,
Forza ragazzi!
