“Shadow of the Kidnapper”

the kidnapping of Elizabeth Harrows

It was October 31, 1933, when a young girl, Elizabeth Harrow, was kidnapped while trick-or-treating. She had wandered away from her parents to knock on some doors in a neighborhood in London, until she knocked on the wrong door.

When her parents didn’t see her return after 10 minutes, waiting near the unfamiliar house, they decided to knock, but received no answer. After an hour, they called the police. When they arrived, they broke down the door and found the house empty, seemingly uninhabited. They discovered that the back door was open, and outside, there were tire tracks on the asphalt, as if something had sped away.

The police began their investigation and found that the house was occupied by a couple of Londoners with a criminal record for molesting children. They conducted several interviews with neighbors, and one of them, Mrs. Scarlet Brown, said she had seen, from her window, an unusual sight that evening: a man wearing a clown mask talking to a child, the couple eating in the house, and teenagers spray-painting on an abandoned house.

Suddenly, three theories emerged: voluntary running away, kidnapping, or that the child had simply gotten lost. The following day, the search began.

The investigation yielded no results. There were no traces. The kidnappers seemed to know exactly what they were doing. The case was causing a stir among citizens and the media. It became a national sensation, and the case was handed over to the best detective in America, Jake Wilson.
