Blood and Asphalt

Scorpio exhaled smoke that curled into the rain like a ghost reluctantly leaving its body. He looked at Monica, her silhouette backlit by the sporadic flash of lightning. He hadn’t expected her to survive Rio, let alone return with fire in her eyes. Maybe that’s why he had brought her here. Maybe, deep down, he wanted this whole thing to burn.He crushed the cigarette under his boot and nodded, more to himself than to her. “You want the truth?” he said. “Then you better understand who you’re dealing with.”He turned away from the broken entrance and started speaking. His voice was low, gravelly, like a growl born from decades of smoke, secrets, and blood.“I wasn’t born Scorpio,” he said. “The name came later. I was Matteo Scarpone once. Naples. Vico San Liborio. My father sold black-market cigarettes out of a fishing boat. My mother cleaned hotel rooms. I learned two things early: silence is currency, and betrayal is cheap.”By the time he was thirteen, Matteo was already running with the ragazzi di quartiere, doing petty jobs for the Camorra. But he wasn’t like the others. While they spent their money on sneakers and girls, Matteo was watching, listening, learning. He had a head for strategy, and a heart hard enough to pull the trigger without blinking.“At nineteen, I was the youngest capodecina in the Scarpone family.” He smiled bitterly. “Of course, by then, the Scarpone family was mine. Blood makes you family. But it’s spilled blood that makes you boss.”He rose fast. Too fast. And that was when Rome noticed.“They called me ‘Scorpione’ because I struck without warning. Quiet. Deadly. I was useful. I was dangerous. And when you’re both, you don’t last long unless you disappear.”There had been a woman once. From Palermo. Her name was Luisa, and she’d told him to run when he still had a soul left to save. But Scorpio didn’t run  not then. He watched Luisa die instead, collateral damage in a war he didn’t even start. That was when he made his move not for revenge, but for clarity. If everyone was a pawn, he’d become the board.“I vanished after that. Faked my death in Naples. Slipped into Milan, then across the border. Reinvented myself in Trieste. Then again in Marseille. And finally… here. Brazil. The land of forgetting.”He turned back to Monica, rain dripping off his eyelashes, his face unreadable.“Now I move people. Weapons. Information. Sometimes justice, when it suits me. But I never play hero. And I never lie to myself about what I am.”Monica said nothing, but she looked at him differently now. Not with pity. Not even with fear. With understanding. The kind that only lives in people who have nothing left to lose.“So this girl,” she asked. “The one they took  who is she to you?”Scorpio hesitated. Just for a moment. But it was enough.“She’s not mine,” he said. “But she should have been. Her mother… Luisa. Before Palermo.”Monica’s eyes widened slightly. The puzzle pieces slid together. And suddenly, Scorpio

wasn’t just the man who saved her. He was a man who had already lost everything once and wasn’t about to do it again.“She’s your daughter,” Monica said.He didn’t reply.Instead, he drew his pistol, cocked it, and nodded toward the factory.“Let’s go,” he said.“Tonight, we take everything back.”

  • Hello again guys 🙂
I must praise your idea of bringing something in English on the website 🙂 and the story itself, if still too short (I’m sure you can do better) it’s becoming very interesting 🙂
Just few corrections to make the story more readable :
“frequent the neighbourhood” is not used at all in English is better use the form : “all those who were often going to that neighbourhood”
“everything made ONE think” again better refer that sentence to the police investigating the scene and use the form “everything made THEM think”
on this part “witnesses said that Alessio was arguing with Tommy, but then they couldn’t give a description of Tommy” how did they know Alessio was actually arguing with Tommy? Doesn’t really make sense …
This is only my personal opinion , take it as a way of improvement 🙂
I vote the unknown person , I like mystery and thrillers 🙂
keep up the good work and see you all at the next chapter 🙂

  • Good afternoon guys
I like the idea that you want to practice your english using the website but I will give you some suggestions on to create an even better story.
First try to use all the characters that the site offers you : not 10, not 20 but 5000 , that’s the real challenge. In this chapter you only describe a scene , but you could have described better the inspector and the detective , and add a little background to the story or the reason why we should be voting for one of the names you written there.
So I will follow you and I’m expecting with the next chapter a little bit more details “in english” and for you to try and use all of the 5000 characters given
    see you all soon 🙂
